Yes it can. Therapy provides a safe space where you are free to share your thoughts and emotions and reflect on behaviours without judgement. I want to help you build on your strengths, heal from past hurts and change the thought and behavioural patterns that continue to create distress in your life. This collaboration requires honesty and commitment to the therapeutic process. The more engaged you are the more you will get out of therapy.

This is a great question, which depends on your presenting issues and the therapeutic approach that will most benefit you. Typically, the counseling process takes an average of 8 to12 sessions. Some persons find relief in just a couple sessions and others require more to see much desired changes. We assess progress weekly and reevaluate the goals of therapy monthly. In this way, we can best decide if the next steps should be setting additional goals for continued therapy, creating a plan to maintain progress, termination of therapy, or providing a referral for a different treatment.

I meet with clients weekly for 1 hour long sessions. Weekly sessions help clients stay accountable and motivated towards efficiently achieving their goals. Following this, clients often decrease frequency of sessions or move towards termination. Healing work that promotes long-term change takes time and commitment. Clients that invest the time are less likely to relapse into old patterns.

Many clients feel better after just a few sessions. Others find the first few sessions challenging as buried thoughts and feelings come to the surface and are sometimes difficult to confront.
In the first session, we get to know each other better, review the informed consent and address any questions you may have. During the first couple sessions, we look at your history and establish specific goals for your therapy. In the following sessions, we work towards those goals, addressing the challenges that led you to therapy.
Throughout the process, we explore what has been helpful and not helpful and will make adjustments where necessary. Even though you may feel better by your second session, it is important to see the treatment plan through.

It is important that you feel comfortable and able to connect with your therapist. You should feel respected and validated and be able to see that your therapist genuinely cares about your wellbeing and wants to help you reach your goals. It is also beneficial if they specialize in the problems that are bringing you to therapy and you are comfortable with their therapeutic approach. I provide a free 15 minute consultation to allow both myself and potential clients to see if we are a good fit.
